Why Consolidation is a GOOD idea...
- Combined schools draw students from a wider community. Students often become part of a more diverse student body and a broadened network of friends
- This broader community is especially beneficial for racial diversity because it allows students to develop a greater sense of community awareness and exposes them to different viewpoints, cultures, races and values
- Consolidation offers more academic options and more variety of classes offered
- Consolidation also offers more opportunity for professional development for teachers and less prep time for classes. Teachers are able to narrow their focus because of fewer classes, whereas teachers in small schools tend to teach a variety of classes across the spectrum. Therefore, teachers become specialized in their content and eligible for higher salaries.
- With larger schools, more money is allocated for instruction rather than overhead costs. In small California schools, 35% of per pupil allotment goes to instruction, while 40 % goes to overhead costs. In larger districts (1,000 students or more), 50 % goes toward instruction and 25 % towards overhead.
